Staff Sgt. Matthew V. Thompson, 28, died August 23 in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, of injuries caused by an improvised explosive device that detonated near his patrol while conducting dismounted operations. Thompson was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. Matthew is the second American soldier to be killed in Afghanistan since January 2016.
Matthew is an alum of Concordia University Irvine. He graduated with his B.A. in Theological Studies in December 2010 and is fondly remembered by his Concordia family.
